Hard Enamel
Hard Enamel pins have a smooth enamel finish. The process requires layers of enamel to be built up and baked until they rise above the edges of the un-plated metal pin. The enamel is then buffed down to be flush with the metal. Then the pin is electroplated.
Soft Enamel
Soft Enamel pins have their metal electroplated or dye dipped before the enamel is added. Only a shallow layer of enamel is added leaving the metal ridges exposed. Because this process does not require the enamel to be buffed some finishes and features are only available on soft enamel pins: Anodized Aluminum (rainbow metal), Pantone Dye, and glitter.
Soft Enamel with Epoxy Fill
Epoxy Fill can be used to give soft enamel the smooth finish of hard enamel. It can also protect glittery sections. Some pins combine hard enamel and soft enamel with epoxy fill to allow for some sections to have glitter.
Die Struck
This type of pin has no or very little enamel fill. It has a dimensional metal design.
Wooden
Wooden pins are made of wood and either have the design printed or engraved on the wood.
Acrylic
Acrylic pins can have a design printed on the acrylic, engraved into the acrylic or be made by combining pieces of colored acrylic.
